A one-day Golden Circle with a lagoon finish
The classic loop takes most of a day by car. This plan saves the best for last: a late-afternoon soak before the drive back to Reykjavík.
08:30
Leave ReykjavíkAbout 45 minutes to Þingvellir.
09:15
Þingvellir National ParkWalk the rift between the tectonic plates and see Öxarárfoss.
11:30
GeysirStrokkur erupts every few minutes. Lunch at the visitor centre.
13:30
GullfossUse both the upper and lower viewpoints. Paths can be icy in winter.
15:00
Faxi waterfallA quiet stop on the way south.
16:00
Laugarás Lagoon or Secret LagoonBook a late-afternoon slot, then drive back about 1.5 hours.
Prefer a mid-day soak? Swap the order: stop at Laugarvatn Fontana between Þingvellir and Geysir, then finish at Gullfoss. Compare the lagoons.
Seasons
Summer vs winter on the Golden Circle
Long days, busy sites
Near-endless daylight means no rush. Arrive at Geysir and Gullfoss early or late to avoid tour bus peaks.
Short days, dark soaks
Only a few hours of daylight in December. Leave at first light, check road conditions, and book the lagoon for after dark.

Driving tips
- The Golden Circle roads are paved, so a 2WD car is fine in summer. In winter, choose a car with good winter tyres and check road conditions before you leave.
- Check the weather at vedur.is. Wind is often the bigger problem than snow.
- Parking is paid at Þingvellir. Pay at the machine or online.
- Many Icelandic fuel pumps are self-service and need a card with a PIN, so know yours before you set off.
