Waterfalls of the Golden Circle
Gullfoss gets the crowds, but three more falls sit on or just off the loop. Here's where they are and how much time to give each.
Gullfoss
The Hvítá river drops in two stages into a deep canyon. Allow 45–60 minutes for both viewpoints. The lower path can close in icy weather.
Öxarárfoss
Falls over the edge of the rift valley, a short walk from the main paths of the national park. Easy to combine with your Þingvellir visit.
Faxi
Wide and low, with a salmon ladder beside it. Usually far quieter than Gullfoss and right on the way to the lagoons.
Brúarfoss
Known for its bright blue water. Park at the official car park and walk in along the river; allow around two hours return.
The South Coast waterfalls
If you have two days, continue from the Golden Circle to the South Coast. Seljalandsfoss, where a path runs behind the falling water, and Skógafoss, with a staircase to the top, are both right beside Route 1.
Finish with a soak. Laugarás Lagoon and the Secret Lagoon are both on the way south from Gullfoss. Compare them here.
